High School Students

  • We offer a number of programs for high school students. These programs focus on supporting educational programs with area schools and organizations, as well as internships for high school students to get hands-on experience within healthcare information technology.

    Our activities range from developing curriculum at local schools to bringing students on our campus to sponsoring and hosting an annual robotics competition, and much more.

    Closing the gap, one program at a time

    Cerner Scholars is a unique course offering targeted toward high school seniors interested in technology careers. The program closes the gap between traditional, classroom-based education and the real world. Offered in partnership with North Kansas City School District, it provides students the opportunity to learn while working on teams across Cerner responsible for developing, marketing, implementing, and supporting Cerner solutions.

    Application to the program is open to students in participating school districts through a competitive interview process conducted in the spring each year. Scholars earn grades based on their performance at work and on special projects. They may also receive elective credit for program participation at the discretion of their school district.

    Proud to support Project Lead the Way

    Project Lead The Way is a rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Education and Mathematics) curriculum offered at more than 10,000 schools nationwide, including 42 high schools and 20 middle schools in the five-county Kansas City metro area.

    Developed by a national non-profit in partnership with industry, PLTW classes engage students in hands-on, real-world projects that help them better understand how core subjects such as math and science apply in everyday life.

    PLTW offers a pre-engineering and biomedical science track, both of which focus on developing underlying problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills needed for success in 21st century jobs. Cerner supports PLTW by participating in various industry council activities, providing in-class speakers, field trip opportunities, and more.     Learn from people that work in the industry

    Cerner’s High School Intern Program provides summer internship opportunities to students interested in a career in healthcare, business or information technology.

    These are paid internships that give students an added perspective on their future career choice. Interns have the opportunity to work on challenging projects while growing professional skills in communication, time management and collaboration.

    Our High School Intern Program allows students to stretch their capabilities and learn from some of the leading IT, healthcare and business minds in the industry.

    Mentoring future leaders in science and technology

    FIRST Robotics encourages young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, inspire innovation, and foster well-rounded life capabilities, including self-confidence, communication and leadership.


    Cerner encourages students to participate in robotics at all levels. We support local robotics programs by hosting Kansas City’s only off-season Robotics competition, the annual CowTown Throwdown.


    This offers teams the opportunity to visit our campus and explore career opportunities through job shadows and other programs. We also provide mentors and financial support to qualified teams.
