When the government launched the 'Power of Information' NHS IT strategy in May 2012, some in the industry accused ministers of offering only a vague vision, without a plan to make it a reality.

The charge was not entirely without substance. However, the industry itself has been slow to set out how technology can address the biggest long-term challenge facing the NHS; how preventative care can be realised to address demographic and lifestyle trends.

It falls to the sector to change that, by demonstrating how improved information and data will be at the heart of efforts to change where and how care is delivered in the future.
