South East London Welcomes a New Digital Hospital

20 July 2015

London – 20/07/2015 – Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust has recently taken a step towards becoming a paperless hospital as they implemented Cerner Millennium. The recent go-live included Patient Administration System (PAS), Order communications, eDischarge, TTAs, eVTE assessments, Maternity and Theatres documentation in use across the whole University Hospital  Lewisham.

The Trust is committed to developing a modern electronic patient record (EPR) infrastructure that will optimise workflow efficiency and maximise care quality and patient safety. The ultimate objective is to merge with Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 2016 to form a fully integrated EPR infrastructure. (The Queen Elizabeth Hospital went live with Cerner Millennium in July 2014).

The Cerner Millennium electronic medical record system will help the hospital to reduce costs and documentation duplication. Clinical staff are saving time by documenting in the system rather than on paper; this allows them to dedicate more time to their patients. The EPR will also improve the patient experience during their hospital journey. The use of Cerner Millennium will increase compliance and provide a safer treatment environment. Finally, continuation of care in the community is being improved thanks to the streamlined discharge workflow implemented.

This deployment marks a further step in the Trust’s collaborative journey with Cerner, allowing in the near future in-depth electronic documentation, clinical decision support and electronic prescribing and administration of medicine. The system forms a base the trust can build on in the future, as they continue to roll-out more functionality over the next twelve months. It will alleviate the need for paper records, improving clinical access to the record and reducing delays in patient treatment.

Elisa Steele, Director of IM&T at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, said: “We have taken a significant step in the Trust’s journey towards implementing full clinical EPR and the Trust has demonstrated its ability to manage significant change programmes post merging with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site in 2013. We have developed an excellent partnership with Cerner and look forward to delivering the next stages of our EPR roadmap.”

Lewisham’s Millennium deployment next steps will include the rollout of the complete e-prescribing and medication administration functionality, as well as the nursing documentation in 2018.

Geoff Segal, General Manager Cerner Limited, said: “Cerner is very proud to be part of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust’s latest steps toward a digitised hospital. We have a long term relationship and look forward to working with the Trust, supporting and enhancing clinical practice and helping to improve the patient experience.”
