by Ali Juma Alajme | Marcel Yammine | Bashar Balish October 6, 2020 Digital transformation of the healthcare sector has seen unprecedented growth and acceptance in the recent past, as a shared global pandemic experience brought to the fore the clear need for better data collection, analysis, and sharing.
by Dr Khalid Alyefei | Dr Nader El Shehabi | Jacob Ankrah September 17, 2020 Proper communication in health care is a keystone in the patient care process, ensuring a safe and efficient patient journey during their visits to the health care facilities. With World Patient Safety Day 2020, it’s important to recognize that while there is still a pandemic across the globe, efforts to enhance and keep all our patients safe are still occurring every day. Sidra Medicine in Qatar is one such organization that has continued to address this ongoing concern via its use of Cerner tools and solutions.
by Dr Anees Fareed September 13, 2020 You all might have read and seen the predictions and visualizations on how a post-COVID era might look like for health care from experts and pioneers in the industry. All of them unanimously state the arrival of a new normal. While reading through some of the suggestions, I’ve been curious to know how many of those transformations we have seen and/or predicted are entirely novel to the industry. Is a new normal being created or is it a timely upgrade of old normal? So, let’s dissect a few of them and see how ‘new’ they are.
by Dina Hidayat | Dr Sadaf Ahsan Naqvi August 5, 2020 A mother starts connecting with her baby the moment she finds out she is expecting. From the first time of meeting her baby on the sonogram, a mother starts dreaming of the day she will hold her baby near and commits herself to nothing but the best for them.
by Dr. Colin Fincham April 14, 2020 During the challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is sometimes hard to try and find the positive elements. About 90% of the world’s children are not in school (1.3 billion), many workers are working from home and our colleagues in the health and care sector and other essential workers continue to put themselves at risk to deliver critical services. But as Plato said, ‘necessity is the mother of invention,’ in this case, disruption is the acceleration of change.
by Dr. Chris Lewis April 2, 2020 As physicians and health care teams around the world find themselves facing the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19, the topic of how we care for ourselves and our professional colleagues has never been more important. I’m part of a care team – physicians, nurses and allied health care professionals – that knows all too well we have the potential of 'crashing' at some point.
by Dr. Anees Fareed December 15, 2019 Raising children can be one of the hardest tasks. No wonder it is often said ‘raising children is like chewing on stone’! And so, providing care to children is even more complicated. It’s hard, complex and must be provided with the utmost care and diligence because children are not just small adults! Hence, it’s essential that the electronic health record (EHR) deployed in a pediatric hospital can handle the complexities of providing specialty care to our children in a safe environment. It requires specific functionalities, workflows, reference ranges and observations to support the work of pediatric care providers.
by Dr. Yasir Khan November 26, 2019 Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that causes the body to produce an abnormal form of haemoglobin, the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anaemia, a condition in which the body doesn’t have enough normal, healthy red blood cells.
by Dr. Colin Fincham October 28, 2019 As we look towards a world without medical error, we often consider activities which can improve patient safety but there is one area, often overlooked, that has time and again been proven to nearly double the risk of patient safety incidents (OR, 1.96 95% CI, 1.59-2.4) and reduce quality of care (OR, 2.31; 95% CI 1.87-2.85)[1]; an epidemic that currently appears to have no amelioration that of Clinician Burnout.
by Raed Amro | Maria Fernanda Montalvo August 6, 2019 Treatment can represent the most important phase of a patient’s journey, so making the documentation side of it safer and easier can only prove to be beneficial. That’s what Hamad Medical Corporation HMC) has been discovering since automating the perioperative documentation practices at one of its hospitals.
by Dr. Colin Fincham July 21, 2019 Dr. Colin Fincham, Senior Director & Chief Medical Officer - Cerner EMEA, LATAM, and Canada, talks to Hospitals magazine about Cerner’s approach to population health management and the innovative approach of working with health care providers to keep communities proactive and engaged in their own health.
by Pamela White May 12, 2019 As we celebrate Nurses Week, it has been an opportunity for many of us to remember the first day we were required to document the care of our patients on an electronic health record (EHR).
by Dr. Osama Alswailem | Alaa Adel March 12, 2019 HIMSS Asia Pacific spoke to Dr Osama Al Swailem, Chief Information Officer KFSH&RC, to learn about how the use of technology has impacted both patients and clinicians, resulting in patient empowerment in their own healthcare journey and the improvement of performance for clinicians.
by Gracamma Joppachen | Jeanne Margarette Grace R. Grande | Rachelle Ann V. Barilla February 11, 2019 More newborns are now exclusively breastfed at Women’s Hospital in Doha, Qatar, in part due to a new program that focuses on educating new mothers. Once the new education protocols were put in place at the hospital’s high-dependency unit, which cares for women with complicated pregnancies, the department reported a significant increase in the number of new mothers who chose to exclusively breastfeed.
by Dr. Osama Alswailem January 2, 2019 Saudi Arabia—primarily a national system of government-provided health care—is focused on increasing funding to improve health care and, in return, the lives of its citizens. Fueled by a strong economy driven by the oil production industry and a vision for the future, Saudi Arabia’s government has spent billions of Saudi Riyals to develop and improve health care, which has increased the number of government and private health care facilities across the country.
