Sidra Medicine streamlines medication dispensing with MPages

Sidra Medicine is a specialty hospital in Doha, Qatar that primarily serves women and children. Sidra is a world-renowned health care facility that implemented Oracle Cerner in 2015. Since that time, staff and clinicians have leveraged several Oracle Cerner tools to better deliver care and optimize processes.

As part of ongoing improvements, Sidra has made some significant strides in leveraging Oracle Cerner functionality. This demonstrates a commitment to lean processes and optimizing workflows for clinicians and patients alike. Recently, Sidra revamped how clinicians ordered from Patient Supplies Store (PSS). This is a first of its kind in the Middle East Region and includes custom functionality that positively impacts clinicians, staff, and patients alike, reflecting Sidra’s dedication to the IHI Quadruple Aim.

Background of MPages and Sidra's new PSS MPages view

MPages provides clinical information using a standard library of components that are included as part of many Cerner Millennium solutions. MPages supports both multi- and single- patient views and can be configured to meet the varied needs of specific roles, venues, and conditions.

Sidra elected to create a specific MPages view and functionality dedicated to PSS ordering and dispersal of patient supplies. This includes easy access in one familiar MPages view to order and dispense patient supplies for clinicians and the staff working in the patient supply store. There is also custom functionality built in that allows the clinician to show the patient the estimated costs, allowing for full transparency. Using the MPages functionality also allows for ease of reordering refills for the patient, as all previous orders are available to view, no longer requiring the clinician to flip back and forth to the patient record. Additional benefits also include custom charge dropping for ease of billing, payment collection via streamlined integration, and the ability to dispense single and multiple items at once. Below is a screenshot of the charge dropping feature:

Having the entire Oracle inventory system integrated is another benefit allowing the store to see stock on hand and make adjustments as needed to satisfy the orders. These are custom built functionalities that take full advantage of what MPages can do for healthcare institutions. Since implementation, several valuable achievements have been realized.


Achievements Since Launch:

  • 97% of PSS inventory is ordered and dispensed using the MPages view
  • Previously, the system took 15 minutes from order to dispense
  • Currently, the order to dispense is three minutes

A patient’s response: “I am a regular customer of Sidra PSS. Previously, I used to take paper-based tickets for the item I needed, and it used to take a lot of time for the team to prepare and deliver. It was also hard to manage the tickets for each item, as sometimes I needed to have multiple paper-based tickets for different items. However, with the implementation, things are much faster now. It’s easy to track my items now, including future dates, monthly supplies, view past items, etc. I don’t need to carry any tickets with me.”


Ongoing value delivery

MPages will continue to deliver value for clinicians and patients at Sidra Medicine. A clinician at Sidra Medicine stated that, “From an operational perspective, launching the Electronic PSS ordering and dispensing MPages view contributes significantly to minimizing errors, provides significant time and cost savings. We managed to reduce the number of full-time employees in the PSS and reallocate the staff to handle other areas, which we wouldn't be able to do if the previous process was still in place.

“It also allows us to control the number of items dispensed and monitor the dispensing cycle to prevent overdispensing. It indeed reflects the lean way of running day-to-day operations.”
