World Patient Safety Day 2020: enhancing communication for physicians

Proper communication in health care is a keystone in the patient care process, ensuring a safe and efficient patient journey during their visits to the health care facilities. With World Patient Safety Day 2020, it’s important to recognize that while there is still a pandemic across the globe, efforts to enhance and keep all our patients safe are still occurring every day. Post-COVID health care - the new normal or the corrected normal?

You all might have read and seen the predictions and visualizations on how a post-COVID era might look like for health care from experts and pioneers in the industry. All of them unanimously state the arrival of a new normal. While reading through some of the suggestions, I’ve been curious to know how many of those transformations we have seen and/or predicted are entirely novel to the industry. Is a new normal being created or is it a timely upgrade of old normal? So, let’s dissect a few of them and see how ‘new’ they are.

Early identification and notification of COVID-19 status in the Emergency Department (ED)

With the highly contagious nature and spread of the COVID-19 virus, it quickly became evident that early notification of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results was critical for the safety of patients and clinicians in the Emergency Department (ED) setting. An existing client reached out to Cerner for recommendations for an early warning system. The collaboration between this large health care system and Cerner resulted in the development of a face-up notification in the Cerner FirstNet® application.

Distance learning in the time of COVID-19

In a matter of weeks, COVID-19 has changed how learning is delivered around the world, especially in the health care sector. With rapid and urgent demand for new COVID-19 related workflows to be implemented, there is also an enormous requirement to create accessible learning materials and courses that need to be deployed immediately. To add to the challenge of immediate trainings, the UAE government also implemented social distancing to fight the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
