Data confidentiality and privacy

Your data protected

Our personal health record is one of the most valuable pieces of information we have – and Cerner is absolutely committed to ensuring it stays safe. While we believe in a world of interoperability, where clinicians have quick and intuitive access to this data when necessary, our first priority remains keeping it safe at all times.

Data protection and security

We have a comprehensive information security program that follows international and national data protection conventions to ensure that personal health information and other sensitive data is suitably protected.

Data handler training

All Cerner associates undergo pre-employment background checks, with obligatory data protection training once they start work. Anyone needing to work within restricted areas receives additional checks and training. Client-side, clinicians are aware of the responsibility they have regarding your data, and devices can only be accessed with codes, swipe cards, biometrics and other security measures.

System confidentiality

Confidentiality, integrity and availability are fundamental to the security model for Cerner solutions, which ensures patient data is not accessible to unauthorized users. Our system has adequate security control mechanisms to enforce confidentiality in place, as well as policies that dictate what authorized users can and cannot do with the data. The more sensitive the data, the higher the level of confidentiality. Cerner follows the highest level of confidentiality when it comes to patients’ data. Our platform integrity ensures that a system and its data do not suffer unauthorized modification. However, it is not always possible to protect against intentional alteration of data. Hence, the mechanisms should be in place to detect when integrity has been violated and to restore any affected system or data back to their correct state. The high availability architecture, failover of strategies, redundancy paths, high standard security mechanisms and practices of our platform guarantee that systems, applications and data are available to users when they need them.
