City of Lenexa sees 77 percent of employees participating in workplace health program improve or maintain health

In 2014, the City of Lenexa, Kan., a government employer in the Kansas City metropolitan area, partnered with Cerner to revamp its workplace health program for its workforce population of 650 people, including 450 full-time employees.

Within two years of launching LiveWell, results show that 77 percent of participating employees improved risk factors or maintained their health status despite aging one year. Additionally, 52 percent of employees designated a provider at the on-site health center as their primary care physician, and 98 percent participated in a health coaching session. Currently, more than 93 percent of full-time employees are enrolled and participating in the LiveWell program.

Results also show City of Lenexa is experiencing a return of $1.29 for every $1 spent across direct and indirect health care costs.

“An overarching goal of the Lenexa Fire Department is to be the employer of choice in the region,” said Lonny Owens, fire chief, City of Lenexa. “The LiveWell program and on-site health center are some of the elements that help us attract and retain great talent.”

City of Lenexa used Cerner Health Performance Reporting services to determine the top three health risk factors impacting its employees: obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. As a result, City of Lenexa leveraged the Cerner Wellness℠ portal and health coaching services, as well as population health and wellness consulting.

It also converted its existing on-site health center to a model designed and managed by Cerner. The health center offers primary care and occupational health services and is staffed with full-time medical professionals.

To encourage employee participation in LiveWell, an incentive program was created, including a points system that can be used to redeem prizes for logging nutrition and fitness, and participating in wellness activities. Members can earn a 50 percent reduction on their health care plan premium for completing a personal health assessment, biometrics screening and health coaching visit.

“The incentive program really works. We have employees find out about health issues they are unaware of through the assessment and screenings. Our people see it as the City caring about their well-being,” said Jim Bowers, human resources director, City of Lenexa.

Providers in the on-site health center are incentivized for meeting clinical quality metrics that focus on body mass index, diabetes, high blood pressure and tobacco cessation.

City of Lenexa is expanding its workplace environment to include walking trails and a large community fitness center; the City also is considering segmenting its population to provide customized engagement programs.

“Our culture at Lenexa is one of positive employee engagement,” said Bowers. “Our wellness program, including our on-site health clinic, is a huge part of what creates that engagement.”
