Health Quest physicians thriving with voice recognition dictation

The challenges of deciphering a physician’s handwriting or waiting for a transcription are no longer impacting patient care at Health Quest.

The Hudson Valley’s largest integrated family of hospitals implemented Cerner’s Dynamic Documentation™ with Nuance Dragon voice recognition in August 2014. Since then physicians have been able to speak their notes directly into the chart.

“To make that information available in real time and digestible and have context to it is extremely important for the health system,” said Chief Information Officer Robert Diamond. “We are seeing a satisfaction on the physician level that is unprecedented for us.”

Eight months after implementation, Health Quest cut transcription costs by more than $900,000. Annually, the health system is projected to cut transcription costs by $1.5 million.

“It has been another win win for us: partnering with Nuance and Cerner,” Diamond said. “There are multiple benefits, and what we’re doing now is implementing it across all the specialties at all three hospitals.”

By the end of 2019, this technology is projected to save Health Quest more than $5.8 million.
