'Where inpatient care is heading': Two NCH hospitals receive HIMSS Analytics Stage 7

Two NCH Healthcare System hospitals have reached HIMSS Analytics Stage 7, the highest level of achievement recognized by the nation’s leading healthcare information technology trade organization.

To date, only 3.4 percent of U.S. hospitals (197 organizations) have received this honor.

“The NCH Healthcare System is honored to be designated as a HIMSS Stage 7 health system,” said Phil Dutcher, COO. “We recognize that this achievement places us in the company of other leading healthcare systems that have also demonstrated that the effective use of advanced information technology materially improves the delivery of care for patients.”

Creating a digital hospital

Clinicians at Stage 7 hospitals deliver care in a truly paperless environment, and at NCH, paper charts are a thing of the past. The 715-bed system, which includes NCH Downtown Naples Hospital and NCH Naples Hospital, launched its Digital Hospital project in July 2013. The initiative focused on removing paper processes from the physician workflows in acute and ambulatory venues.

Fast forward 18 months, and NCH is harnessing the data collected in the electronic health record to improve care. For example, the organization has used this data to refine a predictive algorithm, which detects signs that a patient may be going into septic shock.

After implementing technology-driven protocols, NCH dropped its sepsis mortality rate from more than 30% to single digits. Operations leaders estimate that the technology saved more than 175 patient lives and $3.7 million in costs from avoided complications.

NCH also has expanded its Smart Room footprint to 179 total rooms, giving patients in-bed access to treatment plans and insightful education on their diagnoses. After conversion, the hospital saw increases in patient satisfaction scores — particularly in pain management (up 17.1 percent) and communication with their doctor (up 8 percent).

“From a comprehensive electronic medical record that has assisted in improving quality, safety and efficiency, to a complete 'smart room' concept that has helped improve patient and employee satisfaction, NCH is an example of where inpatient care is heading in the future,” said John P. Hoyt, FACHE, FHIMSS, executive vice president of HIMSS Analytics in a press release.
