Prince Court Medical Centre improves response times, clinical workflow after upgrading system to highest code level in southeast Asia

In September 2016, Prince Court Medical Centre, a world-renowned 277-bed private health care facility located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, completed the eight-month implementation of Cerner’s Managed Technology Offering (MTO) to help manage the data stored in its new onsite hardware. It also upgraded to a 2015.01 Cerner Millennium® code level, the highest level for a health care system in southeast Asia as of 2016.

“The project was generally well executed, and delivered on time,” said Prince Court's Chief Information Officer Ms. Rani Nathwani. “The transition was very smooth and was supported by the very committed Cerner team.”

In the first month after implementation, early reports showed Prince Court’s electronic health record’s (EHR) average transaction response times (ATRTs) were less than a quarter of a second, with 99.6 percent of all ATRTs taking place in under two seconds. This is nearly a 75 percent improvement compared to Prince Court's prior 2007 code level, when ATRTs were .8 seconds with 89.6 percent of all ATRTs taking longer than five seconds.

According to Lights On Network® data, Prince Court was one of Cerner’s top three clients in the world in terms of system performance and speed in September 2016.

“The new system is a lot faster, with the Lights On Network showing us three times improvement in response times,” said Ms. Nathwani.

Nurses have collectively reported they now work on a faster system that is easier and more convenient to use. For example, they can enlarge the size of information displayed on their computer screens, which makes it easier to review patient records and reports more accurately. There is also a better indicator in place allowing nurses to retrieve and execute orders submitted by the physician.

Additionally, Prince Court implemented Cerner’s CareCompass™ solution into its workflow to help its care team organize, prioritize and plan patient care. The solution has provided the nursing team more user-friendly methods to log and track patient information, as well as the capability to identify important tasks that need to be completed.

“With CareCompass, we have quick access to more components than before. We have fewer clicks and we are saving time in completing documentation,” said Prince Court's Nursing Director Ms. Tan Phaik Hong. “It is also easy to pick up on new orders.”

Prince Court has been a Cerner client since 2006. Its EHR was built along with the construction of its medical centre, which opened in 2008. In 2015, Prince Court’s emergency department alone had nearly 45,000 patient visits.

“While the entire Cerner system was user-friendly from the beginning, certain things were making it quite tired, and over time, it generally became very slow,” said Prince Court's Medical Director Dato Dr. Kuljit Singh. “Since the upgrade, the system is faster and more user-friendly than before.”

“Now that we are on the latest code level, and with updated infrastructure, the next step is to build the clinical roadmap to help us get more out of the system, and to switch on functionality that will improve efficiency of charting, prescribing and dispensing,” said Ms. Nathwani. “We are excited about this new journey ahead of us.”
