Marina Salud first non-U.S. hospital to receive HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award

Cerner clients’ most recent accolades are international. Hospital Marina Salud, Dénia in Spain is the first non-U.S. hospital to earn the HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award - ever.

Davies Award recipients are HIMSS Stage 7 and 6 organizations that demonstrate significant, sustainable improvement of patient outcomes through the utilization of electronic health records (EHRs) and information technology (IT) while achieving return on investment.

This first-of-its-kind achievement reflects years of hard work and dedication to improving patient care and business processes, made possible by Marina Salud’s system-wide adoption of the Cerner Millennium® EHR.

“Marina Salud has always sought excellence of care and winning the HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award confirmed that we are working in the right direction,” said Vicent Moncho, Chief Information Officer at Marina Salud, when accepting the award at the HIMSS Madrid event.

Marina Salud provides care to nearly 200,000 people in the Dénia community, located along the Mediterranean coast between the cities of Valencia and Alicante. A per capita payment model necessitates safe and efficient care delivery (and the associated cost savings) to maintain financial stability across its network of 34 primary care facilities, two ambulatory centers and a 206-bed hospital.

Marina Salud achieved significant quality and efficiency improvements since implementing the EHR in 2008. Completely paperless by 2009, it was one of the first systems in Europe to achieve HIMSS Stage 7. Cerner’s EHR made it easier to improve care delivery strategies; those results impressed the HIMSS selection committee.

Cerner Millennium produced time savings for the Spanish health system in two areas: the nursing discharge report and internal transfers from unit to unit within the hospital. Today, 50 percent of the nursing discharge report is pulled from previously recorded clinical documentation, saving at least five minutes per report. Marina Salud calculates this approach has recovered 15 minutes per discharge and/or 15 minutes per patient admission.

Marina Salud also made significant advancements in the detection, treatment and prevention of diseases. Digital workflows enabled clinicians to increase cervical cancer screenings by 84 percent and breast cancer screenings by 15 percent. The time from identification of cancer risk to initiation of treatment dropped 42 percent.

Standardized care resulted in several positive changes at Marina Salud. Hospitalization rates for patients with congestive heart failure dropped by one-third; readmission rates by 35 percent. Hospitalization and readmission rates for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease decreased by 21 percent and 15 percent respectively.

Marina Salud had a sepsis mortality rate of 45 percent. Since implementing Cerner’s advanced sepsis algorithm, that number has fallen to 32 percent and continues to trend downward. The leadership at Marina Salud is confident that extending clinical decision support across multiple conditions will empower clinicians to adhere to best practices and achieve similar outcomes in patient care.

“In a hospital with a process-oriented management, the Cerner Millennium solutions help us define and improve them. Centralizing health records, going paperless, reducing the length of stay, improving the occupancy management and saving money ultimately benefits our staff and patients,” explained Moncho.
