Today, providers have the opportunity to access more and more patient data from outside their system. While this can help them provide better care, too much irrelevant or repetitive data can result in overload, meaning useful information can be missed.
At this year’s Oracle Cerner Health Conference keynote, Oracle Health Chairman David Feinberg, MD, shared that the organization is in the final stages of releasing Seamless Exchange, a new product designed to allow organizations to identify trusted outside sources and automatically eliminate duplicate information. Currently in validation at partner sites, Seamless Exchange can give providers a better view of a patient’s health history and save time by reducing the need to reconcile data within the EHR.
Pulling outside sources into one longitudinal record
“While I’m proud of how far we’ve come in the interoperability of data, the other side of the coin is data abundance, which can mean information overload, especially for caregivers at the point of care,” said Chief Health Officer Nasim Afsar, MD.
At our validation partner sites, Seamless Exchange has successfully filtered out duplicate data from external sources (problems, allergies, medications, immunizations, and labs). This duplicate data creates noise which can be overwhelming and time-consuming to sift through. The filtering and cleansing of outside data means what remains is insightful and easier for clinicians to act upon. “Before Seamless Exchange, I’m not sure any of us had ever been able to quantify how much duplication of data existed,” Afsar said. “Seamless Exchange brings in only the unique and relevant information.” Providers and clinicians access data within their normal workflow, broken out by each clinical concept. Previously, and in many other EHRs, they had to navigate to an additional workflow or screen to view data from external sources. With Seamless Exchange, the internal and external data are compared and then clinicians see only those unique records in a new side-by-side user interface directly within their native workflow. As a founding member of the CommonWell Health Alliance, Oracle Cerner has been a long-time advocate for the free exchange of data. By deduplicating data and limiting the reconciliation burden on clinicians, Seamless Exchange makes it more likely that they can use data available from outside sources. And a complete view of the patient’s history can help inform patient care decisions. Sam Lambson, Oracle Cerner vice president of interoperability, noted that the industry is moving toward a future where ubiquitous, nationwide data exchange is a utility. Seamless Exchange helps enable providers to derive meaningful insights for patient care while lowering the administrative burden. “By joining forces with Oracle, we will accelerate this innovation,” Afsar said. “When we talk people, purpose and possibility, here’s the possible I like to picture: a world where technology is something we don’t have to think about, it seamlessly connects us to the relevant data at the right time, promoting collaboration so we’re free to focus on the purpose of healing through compassionate connections with our patients.” Learn more about Seamless Exchange.
