Improving patient care is not easy, but it is rewarding. Columbia, Mo.-based University of Missouri (MU) Health Care - a 2015 recipient of the HIMSS Enterprise Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence - proves the outcomes are well worth the effort. "We know that better health is a journey in which technology plays a bigger role than it ever has before," said Mitch Wasden, chief executive officer and chief operating officer, in the academic medical center's recent news release. The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Davies Awards program advocates the use of electronic health records (EHRs) to improve patient outcomes. The program is only open to HIMSS EMR Adoption Model Stage 6 or Stage 7 organizations. In partnership with the Tiger Institute for Health Innovation, MU Health Care used its Cerner Millennium EHR to innovate care delivery across its five hospitals and more than 50 clinics. Their success is widespread - including a 25 percent drop in catheter-associated urinary tract infections from 2013 to 2014.
“Cerner helps us create healthier stories in every aspect of our organization.”
— Kyle Kellum, COO Pagosa Springs Medical Center
Critical access hospitals are often the lifeblood of rural areas in the United States. Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) in southwestern Colorado says one of its major arteries is its Cerner electronic health record. "It is necessary to serve the growth of our organization," said PSMC CEO Brad Cochennet. "We grew 30 percent the year we turned on Cerner, and 40 percent the year after that. We would be really struggling if we weren't on Cerner." Some of that growth came, literally, overnight. PSMC, a Cerner CommunityWorks client, was on paper until the stroke of midnight Feb. 17, 2014. PSMC implemented Cerner - and immediately became a HIMSS Stage 6 Hospital.
