Cerner ripple effect: Three Trails Campus is catalyst for future

Bannister Mall opened in August 1980, a few months after Julie Wilson finished her fourth all-state basketball season at Lee’s Summit High School.

“That was before (Interstate) 470 was there,” Wilson said. “We used to take Bannister Road to Bannister Mall. It was the closest mall.”

Through the early ’90s, it also boasted the highest sales of any metro-area mall. But in 2009, Bannister Mall was demolished, the victim of an economic decline that’s sucked 1,600 acres of south Kansas City into blight designation.
