HIMSS rewards three Spanish hospitals for their use of information technologies

HUCA and HUSE have been recognized by HIMSS as paperless hospitals, and received Stage 6 certification due to the positive impact on patient care.

“Marina Salud has always sought excellence of care, and winning the HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award confirmed that we are working in the right direction”, said Vicent Moncho, Chief Information Officer at Marina Salud.

Madrid, 14th May 2015 - HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) has given Hospital Marina Salud de Dénia (Alicante, Spain) the first Davies Award in Europe, and also awarded Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (Oviedo, Spain) and Hospital Universitario Son Espases (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) with HIMSS Stage 6. The Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) uses a scale from 0 to 7 to evaluate the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system capabilities, the impact on clinical practices, and improvements in health results. The three Spanish organizations rewarded are using the Cerner Millennium EMR.

These certifications demonstrate a high level of automation and technological adoption, with proven results in improving patient safety, care delivery, and the optimization of care processes.

Improvement of clinical processes in Hospital de Dénia
Hospital de Dénia is one of the healthcare organizations with the most advanced EMR systems in the world outside of the United States. This has been confirmed with an in-depth analysis of its return on investment with the use of the Cerner Millennium system. The evaluation has also identified benefits in different areas:

  • Standardization of care has resulted in a 35% reduction in hospitalizations for patients with congestive heart failure.
  • Digitized workflows have contributed to a reduction of waiting times for treatments. Waiting times for uterine and breast cancer cases have been reduced by 42%
  • Patient safety has also been improved and deaths due to sepsis have decreased by 36% due to the implementation of the Cerner sepsis algorithm.

Davies Enterprise Award recipients are HIMSS Stage 6 and 7 organizations that can demonstrate significant and sustainable improvement in patient outcomes through the use of an EMR and information technology while achieving a financial return on investment.

Integrated system to standardize treatment and improve patient care
The HIMSS club has two new members: hospitals in Asturias and the Balearic Islands who have achieved HIMSS Stage 6. This introduces them to the exclusive group of thirty European hospitals who are leaders in innovation and application of information technologies to improve patient safety.
With the Clínica Las Condes, in Chile, also with HIMSS Stage 6, all hospitals with the Spanish language version of Cerner Millennium EMR have been recognized by HIMSS as stage 6 or 7 certifications.
HIMSS Stage 6 recognizes hospitals which have a patient-centric EMR and share all information across their entire organizations in real-time. Cerner Millennium also assists clinicians with the decision making process and aids in compliance with best practices. Finally, it links each patient's encounters with tests, surgical procedures, medications, discharges, and screenings they require in order to improve clinical practice to provide better patient care.

The award ceremony took place in Riga, Latvia as part of eHealth Week 2015. The event was attended by Toomas Hendrik Ilves (President of the Republic of Estonia), Guntis Belevics (Minister for Health of Latvia), Vytenis Andriukaitis (Commissioner for Health in the European Commission), Günther H.
