Connecting care providers to children with type 1 diabetes and their families is critical. Through the Cerner Diabetes Initiative, Cerner will invest $25 million over 10 years to provide an online diabetes management tool to every child in the United States under the age of 18 with type 1 diabetes. The initiative enhances traditional methods of patient support, helping to improve communication and diabetes management. Each child will receive:
• Access to an online diabetes management tool
• A personal health record
• HIPAA compliant secure messaging with your healthcare providers
This online tool empowers kids and their families to more effectively manage their health in one secure, convenient location. Kids and family members communicate securely online with their healthcare providers from the convenience of home.
In 2006 Cerner teamed with Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics and the Kansas City Chiefs to encourage participation in an incentive program called "Tackle Diabetes". In 2007, we've continued the program in Kansas City, and have extended the incentive program to Indianapolis and to Washington DC! Cerner is partnering with Riley Hospital for Children, a Clarian Health Partner, the Indianapolis Colts and Roche Diagnostics to "Tackle Diabetes" in the Indianapolis area. In Washington D.C. we partner with Children's National Medical Center and the Washington Redskins. Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy is the program spokesperson in Indianapolis. In the Washington market, there were multiple spokespersons to help us spread the word about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Lia Edwards, wife of Chiefs Head Coach Herm Edwards, and a type 1 diabetic, continues to act as the program spokesperson in Kansas City. Together with your help, we can raise awareness about type 1 diabetes management to help the thousands of area children take control of their condition.
