About PICCM :: JCAHO Accreditation
Under its ORYX Initiative, JCAHO requires hospitals and other healthcare organizations to use one or more JCAHO-approved Performance Measurement Systems (PMS). These systems use vendor-defined quantitative measures and provide external comparisons that enable an institution to assess its performance and make reasoned decisions for improvement.
PICCM's Project IMPACT data system become JCAHO-approved for use under the ORYX Initiative in August 1997 allowing PICCM to make the following statement:
"Project IMPACT has met the initial criteria for inclusion in the future accreditation process and is included on JCAHO's list of acceptable systems. PICCM is committed to meeting future JCAHO requirements."
The Project IMPACT data system includes the following PICCM-defined and JCAHO-approved performance measures:
- Comparison of actual and severity adjusted survival rates.
- Frequency of ICU stays exceeding 7 days.
- Number of patients admitted more than once to this ICU (during a hospital stay).
- Frequency of selected ventilator-related complications.
- Frequency of central venous line placement (or attempted placement) resulting in pneumothorax.
- Frequency of selected complications associated with arterial lines.
- Frequency of cardiovascular procedures with related line infections.
- Frequency of unplanned extubations.
- Frequency of selected pulmonary artery catheter related complications.
JCAHO's ORYX program continues to evolve and several JCAHO-defined core performance measure sets are being evaluated. PICCM is committed to incorporating ICU core performance measures in both Project IMPACT and its IMPACT module series.
