IMPACT Focused Modules

In order to enable all ICUs (including those with limited or no dedicated data-collection resources) to begin to measure and compare their results with peers', PICCM has developed the IMPACT series of ICU improvement modules. Each module concentrates on an important area of critical care area and the highly focused dataset was designed to be collected by existing ICU personnel.

This approach minimizes data collection effort while providing rigorous measurement and local reporting and the benefit of quarterly external comparisons. ICUs begin by collecting core data in IMPACTessentialT and can "plug-in" additional clinically focused modules to address other important areas as needs and resources permit.

IMPACTessentialT

IMPACTessential is the "foundation" module of PICCM's IMPACT series. All other modules require its use.

IMPACTessential includes 34 data elements that describe patient demographics; admitting diagnoses, condition and acuity; lengths of stay in ICU and hospital; and condition on discharge. These data are needed for fundamental measures of ICU performance, such as rigorous severity-adjusted outcomes and measures of resource utilization, ICU LOS, and readmission rates. Data collection typically takes less than 8 minutes per patient.

IMPACTsepsisT

Our first clinically focused module, IMPACTsepsisT focuses on severe sepsis in ICUs. The module facilitates the rapid daily patient screening for the occurrence of the condition and collection (approx. 5-8 min) of infection, organ dysfunction, drug therapy, treatment and outcomes for severe sepsis patients. The goal of the module is to help ICUs identify severe sepsis patients and compare their care and outcomes with similar patients treated in other ICUs --- in order to stimulate improvement. Currently, IMPACTsepsis is bundled FREE with IMPACTessential.

Additional modules are planned for ventilator care and to meet future JCAHO requirements for ICU core performance measures.

Project IMPACT®

Originally developed by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), Project IMPACT® represents the gold standard for comprehensive ICU measurement and improvement systems. Its dataset provides a thorough description of ICU patients, their care and outcomes. Its exceptional customer service and incredible reporting capability have made it the most widely used comparative ICU improvement data system in use in the United States.

Data collection requires a full time data collector (ideally a critical care nurse) for each 15-20 beds for which data is collected.
