COVID-19 Recommendations

The health of Cerner’s clients, associates and communities around the world continues to be top priority.

Cerner’s clinically and medically trained leaders are working closely with the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other global and regional health organizations to align guidance and response.

In addition to the site dedicated to answering frequently asked questions, this page has been designed to access all operational readiness, screening, testing, treatment and surveillance of COVID-19 Cerner has distributed to help manage and mitigate the coronavirus risks.

As additional guidance is made available, this site will continue to provide up-to-date information on how Cerner solutions, resources and partnerships can assist clients during this time.

If your organization is experiencing a staffing shortage or technology limitations while responding to the COVID-19 pandemic,  Cerner Assist provides temporary services support.

Operational Readiness and Communication

Operational Readiness and Communication

CareAware Patient Flow, Tracking, CareView, and Transfer Center / Cerner Capacity Management

Clients can use existing functionality within the Capacity Management suite to aid in care coordination and patient placement. Due to the expected influx of COVID-19 cases, Disaster/Overflow beds will need to be activated. Bed Coordinators will need to understand bed availability of negative pressure rooms along with potential cohorting options for positive COVID-19 results. In order to effectively manage room turnover, Cerner recommends reviewing your milestone priority settings to ensure cleans will be prioritized accordingly.

Clients can use existing functionality within CareAware Connect to aid in care coordination and communication. Dynamic Role profiles can be utilized to aid in the identification of and communication with key roles such as Infectious Disease, House Supervisor. Speed Dial entries should be reviewed to ensure critical, static contacts are readily accessible, such as Lab, Pharmacy, Security. Event Routing and Millennium Discern Alert integration should be considered to distribute result notifications that can aid in expediting isolation protocols and bed placement.

Clients can use existing Clairvia functionality to aid in care coordination and staffing resources for the influx of demand. Clairvia can help you identify the right caregivers and communicate staffing needs across your facility. If your organization would like to review patient needs for the unique clinical environment, Clairvia can help you document special considerations and monitor exposure via assignments. We have created a quick reference site to target the information you might need most to support current and new disaster locations for staffing and patient needs.

Clients can use existing functionality within CareAware RoomLink to aid in care coordination to create awareness among clinicians, family members and guest around Isolation restrictions. By utilizing lab results associated with COVID-19, an association of the result to an existing Airborne or Droplet isolation indicator can increase awareness. Clients can also create new Isolation indicators associated with the Lab results.

Please reference the following link for defining any new Patient Attributes or Indicators based upon DTAs.

Clients can use existing functionality/hardware of Cerner Patient Observer to limit unnecessary exposure of staff as well as conserve PPE supplies. By utilizing the camera and 2-way communication a staff member would be able to view a patient or quarantine area without being present. CPO allows you to maintain real-time contact with a COVID-19 population while limiting exposure. When the appliance is on a rolling cart it allows you to continue virtual observation care across your organization. Place cameras at intake areas to replace greeter or be able to provide a preliminary triage without undo exposure to staff. Additionally, utilize CPO cameras in areas that have not been used as patient care areas previously may require power and network.

Clients can use existing functionality within Cerner Emergency Medicine solutions to aid in patient screening and tracking, care coordination, and result follow up.

At the point of patient entry clients can leverage PowerForms to document patients’ recent travel or infectious disease screening. This documentation will immediately trigger the appropriate isolation precautions order and tracking event. You can hover to see isolation type – Airborne or Contact for example, in ED LaunchPoint. If your Emergency Department(s) are creating “Virus Centers” through temporary structures, we recommend adding the new patient locations to your existing ED location views and to create a specific “Virus Center” tracking list or zone. Additionally, pre-screening will be useful to quickly divert influenza like illness (ILI) patients directly to the “Virus Center” and avoid exposure to the regular ED patient population. The problem alert column in ED LaunchPoint can display an icon when a Coronavirus problem is documented. Specific patient education related to COVID-19 prevention should be given to all patients and COVID-19 quarantine education to possible positive patients. Results Callback can be used to promptly follow up with patients about their COVID-19 results post-discharge from the ED. To learn more please visit Emergency Medicine Tracking for COVID-19 Patients.

Cerner’s Public Health team supports reportable laboratory results and syndromic surveillance (ED and Urgent Care) submissions to local, state, and federal public health authorities. In order to support the COVID-19 response the team is communicating with clients regarding laboratory testing and results. Any laboratory ordering and/or performing the tests can submit an eService request to add the new tests to their reportable lab feeds. As clients await an official LOINC release and subsequent code packages to be made available, Cerner Public Health platforms are able to add LOINCs to the messages outside of Millennium prior to submission to authorities. All positive, negative, and indeterminate COVID-19 results are being captured and reported for clients that have made the eService request.

In addition to laboratory results the Cerner Public Health team has collaborated with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Syndromic Surveillance Platform (NSSP) to include travel history in the syndromic surveillance messages. Cerner clients should be leveraging the updated Power Form for travel history to have this information shared with the NSSP. Syndromic surveillance is timely data that allows state and local public health jurisdictions along with the CDC to identify potential COVID-19 cases prior to laboratory results being made available. Other valuable data for COVID-19 response includes chief complaint, reason for visit, diagnosis, oxygen saturation, and smoking status.

For more information on logging an eService request please visit the Public Health Reporting uCern groups.
